Order of operations on a dead-jack call almost never changes. Patch cord first — it is free to rule out and it is the culprit more often than anyone expects, usually a broken locking tab that lets the plug creep. Then a known-good device on the same jack. Then the same device on a known-good jack. Only after those three do we open the faceplate.
What we find behind the plate, in rough order of frequency: conductors punched to the wrong standard on one end, way too much untwist at the punch-down, a pair seated but not fully punched through the IDC, and a jack that was pushed into the box hard enough to kink the cable behind it. All four pass a cheap continuity tester. None of them pass certification.
In the closet, the recurring one is a panel port that was never punched at all — the run exists, the jack exists, and the closet end is just sitting in the bundle. Common in spaces where a build-out was value-engineered and drops were pulled but only half terminated.
Above the ceiling, look for the newest thing in the space. If a sprinkler head, a duct, a light fixture or a demising wall went in recently, the damage is usually within a few feet of it.
