THE NEIGHBORHOOD
Dutchess is a big county — eight hundred and forty-one square miles straddling the Hudson, far larger than its neighbors to the south — and its parking is spread across four different worlds: a dense commuter-and-retail belt along the river and Route 9, a tourism corridor of presidential estates and art museums, a cluster of college towns, and a broad eastern stretch of farmland and horse country. US Route 9 is the north-south retail-and-estate spine from Wappingers and Fishkill up through Poughkeepsie, Hyde Park, Rhinebeck and Red Hook; I-84 crosses the south over the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge; the Taconic State Parkway runs the eastern hills; and Route 44 and Route 22 carry the Harlem Valley east to Millbrook, Amenia and Millerton.
