WON’T CONNECT · DEVICES OFFLINE · PLAYBACK NOT WORKING · LITE VS OLD VERSION — INSTALL, SETUP & REPAIR ACROSS NYC
If you downloaded Smart PSS and it won’t connect, your cameras show offline, playback won’t open, or you can’t even tell which version to install, you’re in the right place. Smart PSS is Dahua’s own desktop software — the Smart Professional Surveillance System — so if you run it, your cameras and recorder are Dahua hardware: well-documented, widely supported, and very fixable. We install and configure the software, add your NVR, DVR, and IP cameras, sort out the network, and repair the recorder behind it — including systems someone else set up.
Smart PSS is the Windows and Mac program that runs your Dahua cameras from a computer. The name stands for Smart Professional Surveillance System. It is free, it is made by Dahua, and it is what most New York businesses and homeowners use when they want a real screen of live cameras and recordings on a PC instead of squinting at a phone. If you are running Smart PSS, your cameras and your NVR or DVR are Dahua hardware — or a Dahua-built OEM brand — which is good news, because Dahua gear is well documented and very repairable.
Here is where most people get stuck before they ever call us: there is more than one Smart PSS. There is Smart PSS Lite, the current free version for a single site of up to 64 cameras. There is the older Smart PSS 2.0, which Dahua stopped supporting in August 2024 and which, on some versions, can no longer connect through Dahua’s servers at all. And for bigger or multi-location systems there is DSS Express, Dahua’s heavier video management platform. Picking the wrong one is the single most common reason a download “doesn’t work.” We sort out which one your system actually needs and set it up properly the first time.
Smart PSS is the desktop half of the picture. The phone half is DMSS, Dahua’s mobile app for the same cameras. Plenty of our clients run both — Smart PSS on the office PC for a wall of live views and clip exports, DMSS on the phone for checking in from the road. We set up and support both so the whole system works the way you expect, whether you’re at the desk or away from it.
New York runs on small business: bodegas and delis, restaurants, warehouses in the outer boroughs, laundromats, supers managing apartment buildings, contractors watching a yard. For all of them a phone app alone isn’t enough — they want a dedicated screen in the back office showing every camera at once, and an easy way to pull a clip when the police or an insurance adjuster asks. That is exactly what Smart PSS is for, and it’s free, which is why it’s everywhere in the five boroughs.
We cover all five boroughs and beyond — Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island — plus Long Island and the Hudson Valley. Wherever your Dahua system lives, we set up the Smart PSS that watches it.
From a clean first-time install to rescuing a system that “suddenly stopped connecting,” here’s the Smart PSS work we handle every week across New York — the software, the recorder, the network, and the cameras behind it.
The correct current build of Smart PSS Lite (or the right legacy version) installed and licensed on Windows 10 or 11, with the background service allowed through so it actually launches.
Your recorder and IP cameras added the right way — by serial number for remote P2P access, by IP for local — so live view works at the desk and from home.
Devices showing offline, P2P connection failed, or live view stuck loading — we trace whether it’s the version, the network, a firewall, or the recorder, and fix it.
Recordings that won’t open, “recording not found,” or Lite’s crippled export — we set up a working playback and export workflow, including Smart Player.
Installs fine but shows nothing, or takes minutes to open — the classic Win11 build problem. We get it onto a version that actually starts and runs.
Monitoring several recorders or locations from one PC, user permissions, and migrating bigger systems up to DSS Express for central management. Most pair this with access control.
Dahua’s naming is famously confusing. If you’ve been down a rabbit hole of half-working downloads, this is the cheat sheet our techs use on the phone.
Smart PSS is built for Dahua and Dahua-based OEM devices. If you’re running it, your recorder and cameras are one of these — and we service all of it: the software, the box, and the lenses.
Not sure if your cameras are Dahua under a different label? Tell us the recorder model or send a photo of the box — we’ll tell you in a minute whether Smart PSS is the right software and which version to run. If you ever outgrow the cameras themselves, our Dahua camera service can reuse your cabling with a new recorder.
People underuse Smart PSS because nobody configured it past the defaults. Set up properly, it’s a genuine surveillance command center on an ordinary office PC.
Multi-camera layouts — 4, 9, 16, custom — across one or many recorders, with tours that cycle through views automatically.
Timeline scrubbing, event and motion search, and smart-search filtering so you find the moment instead of scrolling for an hour.
Clip export to a USB drive for police or insurance, playable on any PC with Dahua’s free Smart Player — no software needed on the other end.
Motion, line-cross, intrusion, and AI events surfaced on the desktop with pop-up live view, so the screen tells you when something matters.
Separate logins for an owner, a manager, and staff — who can view, who can play back, who can export — instead of one shared password.
Several locations in one client, and with DSS Express, map-based monitoring and central management for a whole portfolio.
From a deli in the Bronx to a loft office in SoHo to a warehouse in Maspeth, we set up and fix Smart PSS across every corner of the city — on-site where it needs hands, remote where it doesn’t.
Delis, restaurants, liquor stores, pharmacies — a live wall at the register and one-click theft-clip export.
Supers and management companies watching lobbies, package rooms, and entrances from the office PC.
Loading docks, gates, and yards in the outer boroughs, with recorded playback that holds up for claims.
A discreet desktop view of entry and common areas, with per-user logins for who sees what.
Body shops, tow yards, and contractor lots watching equipment and vehicles overnight.
Franchises and groups consolidating every site into one Smart PSS or DSS Express console.
These are the questions that fill the forums — IPCamTalk, Reddit, the Dahua boards. Here’s how we answer them on the phone, no upsell.
Viewing, recording playback, and managing Dahua cameras from a Windows or Mac computer instead of a phone.
Download the correct current build, allow its background service, then add your recorder under Devices — we do all three remotely.
Add the NVR or DVR by serial number for remote access, or by IP for local-only, with the recorder login.
Version, network, firewall, or how the device was added — we narrow it down fast.
The current Lite build, installed so the service launches — not a retired version that hangs.
From the legitimate current installer — we bring it so you avoid sketchy third-party downloads.
Yes, over Dahua P2P once the recorder is added by serial number.
There is a Mac build; we install whichever matches your computer and system.
Search “Smart PSS not connecting” and you’ll get a tidy AI summary and a stack of directory sites. Most of it is technically true and practically useless once you’re the one staring at a blank window at 9pm. Here’s the honest version.
Every AI answer and half the forums say the same first three steps: enable P2P, check your internet, reboot the recorder. Sometimes that’s the fix. Often it isn’t, and people repeat the loop for days. The AI can’t see that you’re running a discontinued Smart PSS 2.0 build that lost server access, or that the device was added by IP so it was never going to work off the local network. Those are the two causes generic advice never catches, and they’re the two we see most.
The other thing the summary skips: the difference between a software problem and a hardware problem. If live view works but playback won’t open, no amount of reinstalling Smart PSS helps — that’s a recording schedule or a dying hard drive on the recorder. Knowing which side of the line your problem sits on is most of the job, and it’s exactly what a one-paragraph AI answer can’t do.
Search for help and you’ll be funneled into Angi, HomeAdvisor, Thumbtack, or Fixr, where your phone number gets sold to four “IT guys” who’ve never opened Smart PSS. They’ll happily charge a trip fee to Google the same forum thread you already read. Dahua’s desktop software is a specialty — the version maze, the P2P quirks, the Windows 11 launch bug, the legacy-server cutoff. A general handyman lead from a directory is not that.
We’re a licensed New York low-voltage contractor (NYS Lic #12000287431) who works on Dahua systems every single day. When you call (347) 934-8335 you get someone who already knows why the old client stopped connecting in August 2024 — not a stranger who took your lead off a comparison site.
Plenty of AI answers casually suggest a factory reset to fix a connection issue. On a system you’re using for security, that can wipe your settings, your device list, and sometimes your recordings — the footage you actually needed. We treat a factory reset as a last resort, not a first step. Almost always there’s a targeted fix — the right version, the right way to add the device, a firewall exception — that solves it without nuking anything.
Tell us the version and what the screen shows. Most NYC software fixes happen the same day — often remotely.
Installing Lite for one recorder, local viewing on the same network, basic live-view layouts, adding a single camera by IP at home. If that’s all you need, we’ll point you to the right download and let you run with it.
Remote P2P access, multi-site or DSS Express, devices-offline you can’t crack, Windows 11 won’t-launch, legacy-version server cutoff, user permissions, playback or drive faults, or any business system where downtime costs money. One call beats a weekend of forum threads.
“The single most common Smart PSS call in the city isn’t even a Smart PSS problem — it’s a version problem. Someone’s running the old 2.0 from years ago, it stopped connecting after Dahua pulled support in 2024, and they’re convinced their whole system died. The cameras and recorder are fine. We install the current Lite, re-import the device list, and they’re back — usually over a remote session without anyone leaving the shop.”
“The second one is ‘works at the store, offline from home.’ Nine times out of ten the recorder was added by IP address instead of serial number. By IP it only lives on the local network. Delete it, re-add by serial, and now it works over P2P from anywhere. And the Windows 11 thing is real — some builds install and just show a blank window or take four minutes to open. That’s a build issue, not your PC. We get people onto a version that actually launches.”
— Anwar Jeffres, Lead Surveillance Technician · 25+ years on Dahua systems
Most software, version, and connection problems are sorted same-day — many in a single remote session, often within the hour. A blank screen at the register isn’t a tomorrow problem.
“Our deli’s back-office PC ran the old Smart PSS for years, then one day every camera showed offline. I thought we’d been hacked. They got on remotely, installed the current version, re-added our recorder, and the whole wall came back — never closed the store.”
— Deli owner, the Bronx
“I run three restaurants and wanted all of them on one screen. They set up Smart PSS to watch every location from the office in Astoria and gave my managers view-only logins. Exactly what I’d been trying to do myself for months.”
— Restaurant group owner, Queens
“New Windows 11 computer, installed Smart PSS, and it just showed a blank window. Fought it for a week. They had it launching and showing all my warehouse cameras in twenty minutes over a remote session. Wish I’d called first.”
— Warehouse manager, Brooklyn
No. Smart PSS (Smart Professional Surveillance System) is Dahua’s free desktop video-management software for Windows and Mac. If you use it, your cameras and recorder are Dahua hardware, or a Dahua-built OEM brand like Lorex or Amcrest.
Smart PSS Lite is the current free version for a single site of up to 64 cameras. The older Smart PSS 2.0 reached end of support in August 2024 and some versions can no longer connect through Dahua’s servers. For larger or multi-site systems Dahua points users to DSS Express. We set up whichever fits your system.
Usually the device was added by IP instead of serial number so it only works locally, the recorder lost its P2P registration, a firewall or antivirus is blocking the client, or you’re on a discontinued version. We diagnose which and fix it — often remotely.
Common causes are a Win11 compatibility bug in older builds, a blocked Smart PSS background service, or antivirus interference. We install the correct current build, allow the service through, and add your devices the right way.
Under Devices, add the recorder by serial number for remote P2P access, or by IP address for local-only access, with the recorder login. Adding by IP is the most common reason live view works at home but fails away from the network.
Lite removed or limited some export and view options the old version had. We set up a working export workflow, including Dahua’s Smart Player so footage opens on any PC, or migrate you to DSS Express if you need fuller management.
Usually too many high-resolution streams for the PC, a wrong sub-stream setup, an outdated build, or a graphics-driver conflict. We tune the stream settings, update the client, and match the layout to what the computer can handle.
Yes. Smart PSS monitors multiple recorders and sites from one PC, and DSS Express adds central management, user roles, and mapping. We configure multi-site monitoring for businesses and property managers.
Yes. Most Smart PSS work we do is on Dahua systems another company or a previous owner installed. We can take over the software, the recorder, and the network.
No. Smart PSS is the desktop software; DMSS is Dahua’s phone app for the same cameras. Many clients use both, and we set up and support both for the same system.
Often yes. Many install, version, device-add, and connection problems are solved by remote session. Hardware faults such as a failed drive or dead camera need an on-site visit.
Most software install, configuration, and connection fixes are a single service call, and many are done remotely. Recorder or camera hardware work adds parts. We give a likely range by phone before any visit.
People weigh Smart PSS against Blue Iris, third-party VMS, and a phone-only setup. Here’s the honest comparison for a Dahua system.
Best fit if your gear is Dahua. Native, free, single-site to 64 cameras, full live view and playback. The default we recommend.
Dahua’s step up — central management, maps, roles, bigger multi-site. Worth it for groups and portfolios.
Multi-brand and powerful, but a steeper learning curve and a paid license. Overkill if everything you own is Dahua.
Great for checking in, weak for a live wall and clip export. Most businesses want desktop + phone, not one or the other.
The software itself is free. What you’re paying for is getting it installed, connected, and configured correctly — fast, by someone who does it daily. Ranges below; we confirm by phone before any visit, and many fixes are remote.
Hardware repairs — a failed recorder drive, a dead camera — add parts on top of the service call. We always quote a likely range before we come out, and we’ll tell you honestly when something can be fixed remotely for less.
